How to: Share music from GarageBand (iPad)

Ok, you’ve been inspired by Music Hands and have created a lesson plan after reading our blog post “iPads in the Music Classroom”.

You may have even used our recent article “iPad Music- Lesson Objectives” in your planning.

Your lesson was a great success, your students composed an amazing piece of music on the iPad in GarageBand and they are eager to share their creation with others. The trouble is you’re not sure how to share or export their work. Ready, steady, read on.

By the end of this article you will know how to share and export your music from Garageband on the iPad.

Share, Share, Share

There are two ways a GarageBand song can be shared on the iPad. You can either export an audio file or share the Garageband project.

Sharing a project may be useful if you have a specific arrangement that you want a student to continue working on.

Or maybe you would like to move a project from one iPad to another; in most cases you will likely be sharing an audio file.

Firstly, press “Select” (top right hand corner) on the Garageband file page and choose the song you would like to export.

Next select “Song” to export as a stereo audio file. “Highest Quality iTunes Plus” recommended.

Method?

Afterward, choose the method of export . We have found an effective way to share music is to use the SoundCloud music platform. Simply create a free account and input your login details when asked. Once you’ve logged in once, your iPad will stay logged in, therefore, your next share is even quicker and easier. On Soundcloud, students can stream, share and download their works without an account.

You may want to email the song to your web designer for upload to your websit. We regularly share songs via email, this is in fact the easiest method for sharing with a 3rd party.

If you have other Apple devices a great method is to use AirDrop. You can use airdrop to forward the file to your phone, then share on WhatsApp etc.
